Cultural Identity Shifts During Sojourns, Repatriation and Crisis
Self-concept is composed of many roles, descriptions and identities. Cultural identity is one aspect of the self which has not had much empirical attention. Dr. Nan M. Sussman has proposed a model which describes changes in salience and intensity of cultural identity shifts as a consequence of the sojourn cycle. This presentation will summarize the model, describe completed and in-progress research testing the model, and a recent addition to the model exploring shifts in cultural identity as a consequence of identity threat (i.e. the September 11 terrorist attacks).

Identifying the You in Your Work
We all bring to our work our own sets of values and worldviews. Many of us as we work in the field of intercultural communication try to guide others to become aware that there are different worldviews and that it would benefit us all if we could develop an appreciation for other points of view. In many instances, this is all being done without us being aware that the approaches we use and the philosophies we are guided by are based on our own experiences and points of view.
This session is aimed at us engaging in some self-reflection to become more aware of what we are bringing to our encounters every time we engage with others. Narrative, or the stories we tell about ourselves, reveal how we feel, think, interact and make sense of our social worlds. We will look at narrative as a tool that can help us better understand ourselves and others with whom we interact.

Games that Awaken Cultural Perceptions
Sometimes the realization of how culture influences us happens in an instant - when we see a group of New Yorkers engaged in lively discussion, when we listen to the call to prayer from a mosque or when we watch Chinese families of three generations, enjoying dinner in a restaurant. These flashes of reality help us realize the impact of culture on our daily lives.
Please join us for an enjoyable evening of playing and discussing games. Games and simulations give us opportunities to recreate these flashes of understanding when words may not carry such awareness. At the May meeting some members of SIETAR Metro New York will lead us through Redundancia and Barnga and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of learning by doing. In addition, we will review the value of games and suggest some other experiential possibilities from homemade games to more complex simulations.

Cross-Border Mergers & Acquisitions
According to a KPMG study, "83% of all mergers and acquisitions failed to produce any benefit for the shareholders and over half actually destroyed value". Interviews of over 100 senior executives involved in these 700 deals over a 2-year period revealed that the overwhelming cause for failure "is the people and the cultural differences".
When merging two organizations or acquiring another, corporate cultures need to be meshed. When these organizations have headquarters in different countries, national cultures also need to be considered. Gene Gitelson, President of Individuals & Systems LLC, will share his experiences as a senior line executive responsible for the integration of a large acquisition and a consultant to major companies dealing with global management issues. Gene will show how difficulties encountered in M & A's are further amplified in cross-cultural situations. Gene will discuss (through an experiential framework) the 7 Pitfalls on the Road to Merger Success and specific strategies to enable organizations to change the odds and be part of the 17% that succeed.

Global Teams: How to Build Competitive Advantage
Companies using global teams have found that such teams are necessary to expand internationally with effectiveness. These organizations have found that global teams can be a competitive advantage, yet not all teams are equally productive, even though they may be similarly constituted in terms of the professional qualifications of team members. John will share some of his research and insights on global teams.
Some of the issues he will cover include: What differences are likely to be found between global teams? How can one determine what kinds of interventions to utilize to support global teams? How can you determine what role cultural differences play on global teams? What is the role of the consultant in working with global teams?

Au Contraire! Figuring Out the French
What makes the French so, well, French? As a culture the French are fiercely independent yet seductively romantic, deeply conservative yet avant-garde, dispassionately rational yet dramatically emotional.
Gilles is co-author of the recently published Au Contraire! Figuring Out the French, will explore the assumptions, attitudes, patterns of thought and beliefs that make the French so uniquely French; as well as provide context and perspective on what happens when Americans and the French come together at work, at home, and in any social setting; he will address such issues as education and play, friendship and romance, politics and education.
